Togo is a small West African nation of 4.8 million located on the coast between Benin and Ghana. It is bordered in the north by Burkina Faso. General Gnassingbe Eyadema ruled Togo from 1967 until his death in 2005; his son, Faure Gnassinghe assumed power and was elected to the presidency a few months later. Although in recent years Western bilateral aid has been withheld, the EU has resumed some donations following promises of political reform. The malaria death rate for children ages 0-4 is 256 per 100,000 population, substantially lower than in neighboring Benin. About 2 percent of Togolese children sleep under treated bednets. The tuberculosis death rate is 57 per 100,000 of all ages. An estimated 76 percent of TB cases are treated under the DOTS program. The HIV prevalance rate for adults is 6 percent. Togo's government spends around $9 per capita per year on health care, according to the World Bank. This is lower than health expenditures in neighboring West African nations. The WHO estimate total health expenditures in Togo, including public and private, to be $45 per capita per year. Togo's Ministry of Health is supporting the use of Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) treatment for malaria, but the cost of those drugs exceeds the ability of many patients to pay. The use of traditional plant medicines, and the purchase of drugs on the open market, continue to provide the sources of malaria treatment for the majority of Togolese.
