Benin (formerly Dahomey) is a small West African nation of 6.6 million people. Ruled by military leaders for many years, Benin is striving towards a model democracy and held a presidential election in 2006. It currently enjoys economic growth of about 5 percent per annum, despite economic reliance on subsistence agriculture and a cash crop of cotton. Benin has a small oil industry, and no significant manufacturing.

Benin's malaria burden is very high; the malaria death rate for children ages 0-4 is 960 per 100,000. Overall about 1.9 percent of Benin's adult population is HIV positive, but it is over 40 percent among high-risk urban populations. The tuberculosis death rate is 32 per 100,000. Benin does use the DOTS treatment program for tuberculosis, and an estimated 77 percent of TB cases in Benin are covered under DOTS.

In 2002 Benin formed a National Commission Against AIDS (Comite National de lutte contre le SIDA) to coordinate its national program against AIDS, which has been in existence since 1987. The most important component of Benin's anti-AIDS program is its participation in the international Corridor program aimed at reducing the spread of HIV amongst the West African nations between Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria. Benin has drawn up a national HIV/AIDS strategic plan for 2002-2006. Major projects have been initiated and Benin has been making progress towards the goals set forth in this plan.

Benin has fully implemented DOTS treatment for tuberculosis in all areas.

Demographic data contained in this section was obtained from the following sources: The Population Reference Bureau’s 2009 World Population Data Sheet was used for total population, life expectancy at birth, infant mortality, fertility, birth rate, death rate, % of married women 15-49 using modern methods of contraception, % of population 15-49 with HIV/AIDS in 2007/2008, and the GNI PPP per capita (2008). Literacy rates were found in the Population Reference Bureau’s publication 2005 Women of Our World. HIV prevalence data for 2001 and 2003 was obtained from the UNAIDS Barcelona 2002 report; HIV prevalence and orphan data for 2005 was obtained from the UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic 2006. Data on the % women who have discussed AIDS prevention with their husband or partner can be found in ORC Macro and USAID’s Women’s Lives and Experiences: Changes in the Past Ten Years (Research Findings from the Demographic and Health Surveys). Childhood malaria mortality data was accessed in 2003 from the United Nations Statistics Divisions’ Millennium Indicators. Tuberculosis data was obtained from the United Nations Statistics Division’s Millennium Indicators: MDGInfo 2006. In some cases information was unavailable.

The premiere hospital in Benin is the National University Hospital in Cotonou. In the public health care system there are also 5 departmental hospitals, 84 health centers (with 100 beds or fewer), and 342 community health centers (each with a 4-bed dispensary and a 12 bed maternity ward). Benin also has about 300 village health units, each with a first aid worker and a birth attendant.

There are over 600 private health centers as well. Altogether Benin has about 7,000 hospital beds, divided rather evenly between the public sector and the private. Access to health care is greater in the more populated southern coastal region of the country.

In 1995 Benin had 5.5 physicians and 20.4 nurses per 100,000 population.

Regional Center for Entomological Researches of Cotonou (CREC)

The African Malaria Vaccine Testing Network (AMVTN) has identified the CREC as one of approximately 30 research institutions in Africa capable of supporting malaria vaccine trials. CREC has approximately 20 scientific and support staff, and it has experience in working with WHO/TDR in field studies. Previous CREC studies include:
  • A 1993-1996 study of ITNs (20,000 participants).
  • Study of malaria morbidity in southern Benin.
  • Study of A. gambiae vector population in Benin and Togo.
  • Surveillance of P. falciparum drug resistance.

Professor Martin Akogbeto is the CREC director.
