Swaziland is a small country of around 1 million people located in southern Africa between Mozambique and South Africa. Swaziland is governed by an absolute monarch, King Mswati III.

The HIV prevalence rate in Swaziland is among the highest in the world. The country also has a relatively high TB-related death rate of 85 per 100,000 population.

Swaziland's Ministry of Health has identified HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis as its two top priorities for the next three to five years. In December of 2001 the government of Swaziland formed the National Emergency Response Committee on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA) to oversee and coordinate the implamentation of Swaziland's national strategic plan for combatting HIV/AIDS. Specific objectives contained in Swaziland's Millennium Action Plan for 2003 include:
  • Reducing MTCT transmission of HIV, including the provision of a free medication program for this purpose at 6 hospitals.
  • Expanding voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) programs to 4 additional hospitals, and providing youth-friendly HIV counseling at half of the country's 140-some health clinics.
  • Negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for free or reduced price HIV/AIDS drugs.

Malaria is endemic in eastern Swaziland, and the first-line treatment against malaria is chloroquine.

Demographic data contained in this section was obtained from the following sources: The Population Reference Bureau’s 2009 World Population Data Sheet was used for total population, life expectancy at birth, infant mortality, fertility, birth rate, death rate, % of married women 15-49 using modern methods of contraception, % of population 15-49 with HIV/AIDS in 2007/2008, and the GNI PPP per capita (2008). Literacy rates were found in the Population Reference Bureau’s publication 2005 Women of Our World. HIV prevalence data for 2001 and 2003 was obtained from the UNAIDS Barcelona 2002 report; HIV prevalence and orphan data for 2005 was obtained from the UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic 2006. Data on the % women who have discussed AIDS prevention with their husband or partner can be found in ORC Macro and USAID’s Women’s Lives and Experiences: Changes in the Past Ten Years (Research Findings from the Demographic and Health Surveys). Childhood malaria mortality data was accessed in 2003 from the United Nations Statistics Divisions’ Millennium Indicators. Tuberculosis data was obtained from the United Nations Statistics Division’s Millennium Indicators: MDGInfo 2006. In some cases information was unavailable.

Swaziland has six hospitals, ten health centers, and approximately 142 local health clinics. The Millennium Action Program for 2003 includes a call for building two additional hospitals, including a TB specialty hospital and a new hospital in Lubombo (alternate spelling of Lobamba), and an additional health clinic in each region of the country. The country's best hospitals are located in Manzini, Piggs Peak, and the capital city of Mbabane. Government expenditures on health care amounted to approximately $4.1 million in the 2002/2003 fiscal year. The WHO estimates that Swaziland had 15.1 physicians per 100,000 population in 1996.
