HIV/AIDS Research and Programs

The developing world provides funding for many different HIV/AIDS related programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. The NIH alone is currently funding approximately 170 projects related to HIV/AIDS in 21 different countries in this database. These include drug-development studies, epidemiological studies, prevention studies, and capacity-building programs.

The NIH is only one of many funders of HIV/AIDS research and programs in Africa. Other US funders, primarily USAID and the CDC, also have significant HIV/AIDS programs. International funding for HIV/AIDS programs includes World Bank Multi-sectoral HIV/AIDS Projects throughout Africa, as well as development aid from many industrialized nations. NGO and foundation support for HIV/AIDS programs comes from major corporations, international non-profit organizations, and philanthropic foundations.
