HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria present a growing crisis in global health. In response, the United States and the worldcommunity initiated numerous research projects aimed at reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The global response created a need for a database providing accurate and easily accessible information on current projects and research capacity in developing countries. In response, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) tasked RTI International with developing an Internet-accessible database to meet this need. The current database, focusing on research activities and capabilities in sub Saharan Africa, serves as a prototype for review and comment. The resulting database is organized by country, and contains:
- Data on disease burden, including information on drug-resistance where that is an issue
- Background information on demographics and the economy for each country
- Information relating to political stability or instability, where that may be an issue impacting donor assistance or medical research activities
- Information on the country's health policies and health infrastructure
- Data on key research institutions, hospitals and universities in each country, including contact information if it is available
- Summaries of NIH sponsored research in the country for recent years, identifying principal investigators and other pertinent information
- Data on other funding from the developed world, including but not limited to USAID and other bilateral international aid programs, World Bank loans, the activities of UNAIDS and other UN agencies, and the activities of NGOs.
